Kohala High School

Kohala High School is a small rural school that serves the North Kohala District of the Big Island. Established in 1936, Kohala grew as a K-12 school until 1995 when the elementary school separated from the high and middle school. The Middle School was subsequently established in 2001 with its own administration. All three schools continue a comprehensive, collaborative effort to provide a personalized comprehensive education for each student.

E ala e na paniola—Rise to the Challenge. Cowboys! Kohala High School has lived up to its motto. KHS has been "In Good Standing" from the beginning of the No Child Left Behind legislation; one of the few high schools in the state to do so. As a small student centered high school, Kohala has been able to concentrate on individual student needs. The school has a strong academic program offering a full range of opportunities to students including AP and GT classes as well as vocational classes to meet Career Pathways and foreign language and fine arts. Kohala High School extends its academic program for students with the use of eschool, and Nova Net. The school will also be introducing AVID in the 2006-7 school year to help better prepare students for post high school education. The school continues to focus on developing students who take responsibility for their own learning. A mainstay of this effort is the mentorship program which supports the Student Lead Conferences that are culminating activities each academic year.

Kohala not only meets its academic challenge, it is also competitive in athletics. Kohala fielded 41 teams in 15 sports with over half the teams going to playoffs. Kohala had representation in each season at the State tournaments by sending athletes in Girls' Cross Country, Girls Softball, Boys and Mixed Crews in Paddling, Swimming, Wrestling, Tennis and Track and Field. KHS took a BIIF Champion in Girls Wrestling.

KHS balances academics and athletics with programs, clubs and activities that support students in growing into fully participating citizens. The school also sponsors a variety of service organizations that contribute to the welfare of the community.
